Social Cognition & Interaction Training (SCIT)

An abstract painting shows multiple interconnected faces in shades of blue and gray.

Social Cognition and Interaction Training (SCIT) is a set of tools for managing social situations. It focuses on how we THINK in social situations–especially what we think about other people’s thoughts, feelings, and motivations. SCIT was originally designed as a group counseling approach, but the tools can be shared in many ways, including through this Reflective Training format.

To administer SCIT in its original format, the SCIT manual is available from Oxford University Press (www.oup.com). You will also need a series of video vignettes and powerpoint files, which can be downloaded from this website: scit.web.unc.edu. With that in hand, you can use Reflective Training to rehearse your skill at facilitating SCIT groups.

To use a streamlined, flexible form of SCIT, you can access the SCIL manual here on reflectivetraining.org in the More Information tab on your SCIT Dashboard. You probably will also want to access the materials available through scit.web.unc.edu.

SCIL can be used by licensed mental health providers as well as peers, family members and other helpers. Reflective Training activities can be used to build your mastery of SCIL so that you can serve as a group facilitator. Reflective Training can also be used to practice social cognitive skills to use in your own social life.
